Before June 19 1865 not all enslaved people knew that President Lincoln had freed them 2 years earlier at the end of the Civil War. Troops in Galveston Texas let these people know they were free Americans. On June 19 2021 Congress made Juneteenth a federal holiday. Juneteenth is a day that all Americans can celebrate our freedom.
