SCAN YOUR ENVIRONMENT! N OTICE things around you A LERT to others/things C ONTEMPLATE S TOP

My colleagues and I have been working on getting our Autistic middle schoolers to behave appropriately "in the moment".  The worksheets for my Asperger kiddos don't work as well as "quick" references, when the behaviors are off-task. We came up with the code: "SCAN", because it works better than STOP.  The kids actually like relating to SCAN, (like a scanning machine). I will say "SCAN your environment please", when they are doing something off-task.  The first thing they do is STOP, which is my first step.  Then, they are smart enough to remember the acronym symbols for SCAN.   Success has been hit and miss, so far, because we constantly have to say "SCAN", (it's not intrinsic yet) but they are beginning to get it.    Good Luck!  Please use it, and let me know how it works out for you, but PLEASE give me credit for MY idea.  Thanks!  Bea R. Wade. SLP
