Groundhog Fun Facts Groundhogs are medium-sized rodents with robust bodies Short Legs bushy tail. In the wild groundhogs typically have a lifespan of 2 to 3 years. However their life expectancy can be longer in captivity. Groundhogs are known for their high-pitched whistle which is often referred to as a "whistlepig" or "woodchuck." The whistle is used to communicate with other groundhogs especially as a warning signal. Groundhogs are herbivores mainly feeding on vegetation such as grasses clover fruits and vegetables. They are considered agricultural pests in some areas because they eat farmer's crops. Groundhogs are known for their hibernation habits. They fall into a sleep state during the winter months reducing their body temperature and metabolic rate. Groundhog Day is a popular tradition in the United States and Canada celebrated on February 2nd. According to folklore if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow there will be six more weeks of winter; if it doesn't spring will arrive early. Groundhogs are skilled diggers and their burrows can be quite elaborate. The burrows serve various purposes including hibernation raising young and providing shelter from predators. Groundhogs are primarily ground-dwelling animals. They dig burrows for shelter often with multiple entrances.
